Wheelbase, not overall length, does the work
Rear legroom comes from the distance between the axles rather than from total length, because the space between the seat and the front seatback sits inside that dimension.
Extending overhangs adds trunk or nose but nothing usable for passengers, which is why long-wheelbase variants are engineered as distinct bodies rather than stretched bumpers.
A longer wheelbase also lengthens the interval between an axle hitting a bump and the other axle following, which smooths the pitching motion passengers feel most.
The rear seat is the harder ride position
Passengers behind the rear axle experience amplified vertical movement, and they have no steering wheel or pedals to brace against or to anticipate what the car will do next.
Anticipation matters more than magnitude. A driver knows a corner is coming and tenses accordingly, while a passenger reading in the back is moved unexpectedly.
That is why flagship suspension tuning is judged from the rear seat, and why systems that read the road ahead and prepare the dampers are fitted here first.
Noise engineering targets the back
Rear passengers sit close to the rear wheels and over the suspension mounting points, so road roar transmitted through the structure reaches them more directly.
Acoustic glass, thicker rear bulkhead insulation and hollow subframe fillings all address that specific path, adding weight in a place a sports sedan would avoid.
The measurable target is not silence but consistency, since a cabin quiet at one speed and boomy at another is more fatiguing than one that is uniformly muted.
Controls migrate rearward
Flagships give rear occupants their own climate zones, seat adjustment, window shades and often a control interface, which turns the back into a second cockpit.
Each of those requires wiring, modules and packaging space, and the cumulative weight is significant enough to influence spring rates and brake sizing.
Reclining and powered rear seats also change crash engineering, because occupant position at the moment of impact is less predictable than in a fixed seat.
The market explains the priority
In several major markets for these cars, ownership commonly involves a driver, and the vehicle's job is to carry its owner comfortably rather than to be enjoyed from the front.
American buyers of the same models often drive themselves, which is why the shorter wheelbase versions remain on sale here alongside the extended ones.
Manufacturers therefore engineer one platform to satisfy both uses, and the compromises in that balance are visible in how the two versions are tuned differently.
