Ground clearance is the number most often quoted for off-road capability, and on its own it explains very little. Three angles describe what a vehicle can actually clear.

The three angles describe three failure points

Approach angle is measured at the front, between the ground and a line from the front tire contact patch to the lowest point of the front bodywork.

Departure angle is the same measurement at the rear, and breakover angle describes the ridge a vehicle can straddle before its belly contacts the crest.

Each corresponds to a distinct way of getting stuck: nosing into a bank, dragging the rear off a ledge, or hanging on the frame with the wheels spinning in the air.

Overhang is the enemy of the end angles

Anything ahead of the front axle or behind the rear axle reduces the corresponding angle, which is why purpose-built off-road vehicles have short, blunt ends.

Modern bumper designs work against this. Pedestrian protection, crash structures, parking sensors and air intakes all push bodywork lower and further out.

That conflict is why off-road trim levels frequently change bumper shape rather than adding lift, since removing overhang can be worth more than raising the body.

Wheelbase and breakover pull in opposite directions

A long wheelbase improves stability on descents and rides better on washboard surfaces, but it worsens breakover angle because the belly spans more distance.

Short-wheelbase versions of the same vehicle clear crests that the long version straddles, which is why two-door variants of off-road models persist despite poor practicality.

Larger tires raise the whole chassis and improve all three angles at once, which is why tire size is the most effective single change a modification can make.

The lowest point is not always the axle

Quoted ground clearance often refers to the differential housing, but running boards, exhaust components, fuel tank shields and suspension crossmembers may sit lower.

On independent suspension the low point moves as the wheels articulate, so clearance measured on level ground overstates what exists mid-obstacle.

Solid axles keep a constant differential height relative to the wheels, which is a genuine advantage over rough ground and one reason the layout survives on serious vehicles.

Why the numbers rarely appear on mainstream crossovers

Vehicles designed for pavement have long overhangs and low front fascias, and their angle figures would compare poorly against any truck-based competitor.

Manufacturers therefore quote ground clearance, which sounds encouraging in isolation and says nothing about whether the bumper will reach the obstacle first.

A buyer intending genuine trail use gets more information from the three angles and the location of the lowest hard point than from any drivetrain description.
